Dennis H. Langer, M.D., J.D., Chairman, is Senior Vice President, Project and Portfolio Management, Glaxo SmithKline Pharmaceuticals Research and Development.
His responsibilities include leading Worldwide Project Management and Portfolio Management activities for all Research and Development assets, for all therapeutic
areas; and leading Worldwide R&D Strategy and R&D Policy functions. He joined SmithKline Beecham in 1994 as Vice President and Director, Business Strategy-U.S.,
SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals from Neose Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he was President and CEO. Prior to that, he had served as Senior Director, Marketing
and Group Product Director, Marketing at G.D. Searle & Co.; Senior Product Manager and Associate Director, Clinical Research at Abbott Laboratories; and Associate
Clinical Investigator at Eli Lilly & Co.
Dr. Langer received a B.A. from Columbia University, an M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine, and a J.D. (cum laude) from Harvard Law School.
A board-certified psychiatrist, he completed a residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, a fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Boston, and was a Clinical Associate at the
National Institutes of Health, and a Clinical Associate Professor at both Indiana University School of Medicine and Chicago Medical School.
Louis M. Sherwood, M.D., served as the Senior Vice President for Medical and Scientific Affairs in the U.S. Human Health Division of Merck & Company for ten years.
He now works as an independent consultant and also holds appointments as Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Visiting Professor of
Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In his previous position, Dr. Sherwood served as Merck’s Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. and was responsible for
all medical activities in the U.S. market, including the Clinical Development program, Outcomes Research and Management, Medical Services, Academic and
Professional Affairs and the Medical Directors in various regions of the country. Dr. Sherwood joined the Merck Sharp & Dohme International Division in 1987 as Senior
Vice President and in 1989, he moved to the Merck Research Laboratories, serving for three years as Executive Vice President, Worldwide Development, where he was
in charge of new drug development during a very productive R&D period.
Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Sherwood served for seven years as Baumritter Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
and as Physician-in-Chief, Montefiore Medical Center, New York. He had served previously as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Michael Reese Medical
Center and Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, as well as Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Chief of the Endocrine Unit at
Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Sherwood has been President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and
the American Physicians Fellowship for Medicine in Israel, and currently is Vice President for Strategic Planning of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians
(AAPP). He continues to serve on the Clinical Research Roundtable of the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Advisory Council, Department of Veterans
Affairs. He has received numerous awards, the most recent being the Lifetime Achievement in Pharmaceutical Medicine Award from the AAPP and the Special Recognition
Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine.
