Lamp color has been shown to have a significant effect on visibility under certain circumstances.
For outdoor lighting, evidence suggests that higher safety and security can be achieved by use of light sources having improved blue
and green output versus sodium sources. In this course, attendees will learn the technical background for the indicated visibility
improvements, how these effects relate to various lighting applications, particularly outdoors, and how to apply the latest information
to improve practical lighting design.

The effects of light on human health and behavior: Relevance to architectural lighting. In lighting building interiors, three major objectives
have been to provide light for optimum visual performance, visual comfort, and aesthetic appreciation of the space. It
has now been clearly demonstrated that light is a potent stimulus for regulating hormonal responses, circadian rhythms and
seasonal cycles in many species including humans. Further, light therapy is effective for treating selected affective disorders,
sleep problems, and circadian disruptions. Very recent discoveries indicate that these non-visual effects of light are mediated by
a photoreceptor system in the eye that is distinct from the classic rods and cones for
vision. These findings provide the basis for major changes in future architectural
lighting strategies. In this course you will learn up-to-date findings on how light
regulates biological rhythms, hormones and behavior in humans, how light can be
used to treat clinical and non-clinical problems, and how this research is leading
to the development of new lighting products and architectural lighting.

The graying of the population means we must be increasingly conscious of the visual and physiological needs of the older users of
indoor and outdoor environments. In this course you will learn about the physiology of the aging eye and how it affects what seniors
see and perceive, how to change the visual environment with lighting and finishes so that they see comfortably and remain independent
longer, and how light and darkness are essential elements for good health, particularly for older folks. You will also learn simple steps
for fighting osteoporosis, poor sleep quality, and maintaining immune system health.
Pre-requisite: Attendees should have an understanding of units of light, color, and measurement.
