Energy and environmental codes are becoming tougher than ever. ASHRAE/IES 90.1-1999 is now the standard of government projects throughout the US and serves as the non-residential portion of the new International Energy Conservation Code 2000. Even more stringent codes are used in California, Washington, Oregon, Florida, Minnesota and Massachusetts. This workshop will prepare you to understand and design lighting to comply with these and other codes as part of professional lighting practice. This workshop will include discussions about exemptions, forms, compliance documentation, and problem areas within specific codes (especially ASHRAE/IES 90.1 and Title 24). Design strategies and compliance methods will be explained in detail, especially for the difficult to comply projects like retail stores, hotels and hospitality projects. Attendees will receive a CD ROM containing forms, documents and other useful information for energy code compliant practice in the US. All information provided will be updated from 2003 Information. The presentation will include the latest information on 2005 California Title 24 and 2004 ASHRAE/IES 90.1.

The daylighting methodology contained in this workshop is one part art and one part science. Matthew Tanteri, daylighting consultant and educator, uses a distinctive visual approach to present essential concepts and application techniques. A set of "quick-tips" will be introduced that has been culled from contemporary daylighting literature and research centers around the world. The focus of the workshop is to develop the attendee's ability to assess the daylight potential of basic fenestration designs. In the process they will learn what daylight is, what daylighting is, and how they can reduce a building's energy consumption.

This workshop will present an in-depth discussion of the technology advances, trends and applications that are making headlines in both the lighting and the business world. The discussion will separate fact from hype in the prospects for LED illumination, the technical and non-technical hurdles, and must-have tips for designers and specifiers. Attendees will take a look under the hood of LED lighting systems (including lamps, optics, power supplies, controls, programming, etc.) and learn details of UL/CSA listing. Attendees will learn about important advances in LED technology and where the technology is headed, the do’s and don’t’s of incorporating LED illumination in wide-ranging applications, and technical considerations and regulatory and compliance updates. Case studies included.

This is the lighting version of reading, writing and arithmetic. Too often retrofitters and facility people just think retrofit (retrofitting existing fixtures) and do not consider relight (replacing fixtures one for one, such as replacing a direct troffer with an indirect basket troffer), or redesign (new layout, such as replacing troffers with rows of suspended indirects). Life cycle costing and reduced negatives regarding worker productivity show how relighting and redesigning are o f ten more cost effective than retrofitting. High performance T8s, new generation electronic ballasts, and retrofit kits that provide the benefits of relighting will be included.

In this workshop, retail lighting challenges typical of Big Box, Specialty, Mass Merchant, Department Store and Shopping Malls will be defined, and responses and solutions will be presented with audience participation encouraged throughout the discussion. Considerations explored will include initial lamp specification, re p l a cement cost, luminaire accessibility, color rendering, energy codes and cost, and sustainable design and maintenance, addressing key function areas of the store . The end-user value chain and the decision-making process will also be explored. Learning objectives of this workshop are: to learn the needs of various types of retailers as they relate to maintenance, energy and other technical considerations; to understand how specific lamps, controls, luminaires and other products and services can satisfy the needs of the retailer’s sales goals, budget, maintenance, and visual merchandising; and how to design effective retail lighting within today's energy constraints amidst rising maintenance costs.
