This HOPE VI project replaces 1940s public housing with a new, denser neighborhood consisting of a mix of uses for
residents of diverse incomes. WRTs master plan was a key factor in the grant award of $49 million, which in turn
has leveraged additional investment. The plan extends the existing street grid into the 36-acre site and organizes
development around a spine of public parks, which provides a pedestrian connection among residences, neighborhood
shopping, and transit. Solomon E.T.C., A WRT company, designed 400
new housing units which vary in type and density—from row houses on the interior of the site to apartments over
retail along the perimeter streets.
Winner of the New Face of Public Housing Award 2002 conferred by HUD and the Congress for the New Urbanism.
