The renovation and expansion of Job Haines Home—located on a tight, 2-acre urban site—was challenging from both design
and operational standpoints. The program called for a new 30-bed nursing wing, a 60-unit assisted living residence and
associated commons/support spaces, as well as the renovation of the 90-year-old main building, which was to remain the
focal point of the community and be fully integrated with the new construction. To enable Job Haines to stay fully
operational during construction, the project was implemented in three phases. The resulting design creates an urban
village complete with secured outdoor courtyards, a "wanderers loop," and other amenities to enrich the lives of its
residents.
