This revitalization plan, prepared for a federal HOPE VI application, proposes a new urban neighborhood on six city
blocks. It calls for the demolition of 910 units of obsolete public housing, construction of 1,029 mixed-income rental
and affordable homeownership units on and off site, and the development of new retail, mixed-use commercial and
institutional uses. Located a few blocks from City Hall, the new Metro community will benefit from Birminghams focused,
long-term effort to reoccupy its downtown core with a vibrant mix of uses. The plan was forged through a four-month-long,
participatory planning process and has ultimately resulted in a $35 million grant from HUD that leverages an additional
$125 million.
Winner of a special Certificate of Recognition in 2002 from the New Face of Public Housing, a joint awards
program of HUD and the Congress for the New Urbanism.
