In some cases, a community itself is a destination attraction whose success can jeopardize the very characteristics that make
it special. WRT's comprehensive plan for Sanibel Island, long regarded as one of Florida's most scenic and environmentally
sensitive barrier island residential resort communities, was one of the first in Florida to introduce principles of
sustainability and environmental carrying capacity. The plan's effect has been to minimize development pressures that once
threatened the island's sensitive habitats and to improve the quality and pattern of permitted development through the use
of design guidelines. As a result, the island has retained and restored its wetland systems, natural beach, and shoreline
edges and remains a leading destination for ecotourism.
