This master plan for a 475-acre park along Chartiers Creek in western Pennsylvania involved extensive community input
and resulted in balancing preservation of the natural landscape and its exceptional scenic value with limited active
recreation. By clustering active uses and new construction in the parks north end, the plan encourages a new sense
of community in the Mayview Commons. A mile-long sloping "arc walk" provides access to the major site features: a
community center, recreation center, and public lawn in the Mayview Commons; a community garden; environmental
education center; and the major habitats (steep slopes, woodland, wetland, and creek). The remainder of the site is
devoted to passive-use trails and landscape restoration projects developed as gardens of natural process.
