WRT completed all the environmental studies required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for construction
of the 103-mile Washington, D.C. Metrorail System. Since 1972, WRT has led more than 100 separate environmental studies
that involve construction of transit facilities whose total estimated capital costs exceed $9 billion. For each of
these studies, we assumed the primary role in interagency coordination, project scoping, and public involvement activities.
Through time, WMATA and WRT have developed a transportation facility planning process responsive to the intent of NEPA and
still used today. This integrated design process is sensitive to environmental conditions and to community concerns and
has contributed to a transit system that meets the regional transit needs of metropolitan Washington in an environmentally
responsible manner.
