This riverfront master plan for The Principal Insurance Company and the city of Des Moines envisions a series of walking paths and bridges to connect the east and west sides of Des Moines. The project connects four downtown attractionsthe Botanical Center, Court Avenue District, new Science Center of Iowa, and a proposed events centerand also serves as a hub for the citys numerous bike trails, completing a loop from the Saylorville area to Grays Lake. The Principal Riverwalk is divided into three development zones—Northern, Historic, and Recreation. Highlights include pedestrian bridges, riverfront parks and gardens, a fishing pier, a canoe and kayak run, a 1.2-mile multi-purpose trail, a fountain and skating plaza, an events plaza, and a bladder dam to allow water activities.
