Often cities undertake streetscape projects to attract higher quality development; in Palo Alto, the opposite
was true. Here, a vibrant retail and cafe district felt run down because of the cluttered character of the
public areas. WRTs design of improvements elevate the character and craftsmanship of the public areas to
complement those of the private domain. Improvements include new lighting and street furniture, further
enhanced by talents of local artisans who designed details such as custom-forged iron railings and hand-painted
ceramic tiles.
