Bracketed by the State Capitol to the east, and the campus of the University of Wisconsin to the west, State Street is
the city's principal urban destination, providing a unique mix of housing, cultural, retail, and entertainment uses.
WRT, artist Brad Goldberg, and Kiku Obata & Company collaborated on the redesign of State Street in an effort to enhance
and define the street's wider area of influence. To meet the many functional demands of the street's limiting 66-foot
right-of-way, a "flex" approach was promoted to allow for key blocks to function alternatively as vehicular throughways
and as pedestrian-only spaces. All of the streetscape elements are viewed as potential works of art with the aim of
transforming the street into a cultural showcase. |
