This collaborative planning effort focuses on restoring and enhancing the Anacostia River's long-neglected
waterfront. WRT is part of the design team assisting the city with developing a vision for the waterfront's
future and identifying the strategic actions needed to achieve it. Recommendations include restoring the
river's water quality and natural beauty, reclaiming the waterfront as a magnet of activity, stimulating
sustainable development in adjacent neighborhoods, promoting excellence in design, and engaging the
community in river stewardship. WRT defined the environmental agenda and open space framework for the
2,800-acre riverfront corridor and developed design guidelines for public open space. A major feature of
the plan is a 5-mile trail along the waterfront, connecting parkland along the Potomac with parkland in
suburban Maryland.
