The restoration and reuse of Richmond's historic canal system and the development of Canalwalk
are excellent examples of city revitalization. They reveal and draw upon the past as an economic engine for
the future, combine public and private initiatives, and provide a major public amenity in keeping with the
city's heritage. Master planned and designed by WRT, Canalwalk is a new public promenade along the edge of
the James River and is the centerpiece of a major downtown renaissance. The project has been a catalyst for
private investment estimated at $450 million, and already nearly $137 million of construction is underway.
The project won the Waterfront Center's 2002 Top Honor Award for Excellence on the Waterfront. |
